International Summer Academy of Dance in Cologne

The International Summer Academy of Dance has been held in Cologne for the 44rd time from July 9 to 20, 2000 offering classes and seminars in all special subjects of theatre dance. The Summer Academy is the oldest institution for the art of artistic dance in West Germany. Every year since 1957, this non-commercial specialist event is the meeting point for students, professional dancers, choreographers, ballet masters and teachers coming from home and abroad.

Technical perfection, artistic inspiration, introduction into special subjects of dance and the personal contact and interchange with teachers and colleagues stand for the creative atmosphere of the Summer Academy. Its versatile structure offers – apart from the teaching of traditional subjects – chances for new developments and trends in contemporary dance. A high level teaching is guaranteed by renowned teachers for all special subjects and by the fact that the seminars are geared to different level degrees.

The following subjects are taught in the courses: classical dance, modern dance, contemporary dance, theatre dance, choreography, characteristic and folkloric dance, Jazz dance, tap dance, Hip Hop, Contact - Improvisation and Feldenkrais technique. There are courses for beginners and advanced beginners as well as advanced and master courses. In the seminars for improvisation and composition/choreography special emphasis is put on choreographic ateliers. Furthermore, special seminars will be offered for teachers.

For a long time, a co-operation with numerous international training centres has been established; every year, graduates from the public academies of Paris, Prague, New York, Moscow, Budapest and Toronto are participating in the courses of the Summer Academy. In addition, there is a co-operation with the centres for contemporary dance of France and Great Britain. The Summer Academy also offers scholarships for winners of various competitions as well as for especially sponsored graduates.
